Job Shadow - Cosmetologist
My job shadow papers were misplaced but I do remember the majority of what happened that day.
I job shadowed a cosmetologist named Maria Morales. The career I job shadowed has nothing to do with my pathway which is Nursing. The reason why I job shadowed a cosmetologist is because I already knew what was needed to be a Registered Nurse because I took the Exploring Health Careers class my sophomore year but I didn't have a lot of information on what was needed to become a cosmetologist. I am I contacted her and asked her if I could job shadow her, she said yes and we set a date. I saw what she did as a cosmetologist and I asked many questions. Then at the end I thanked her for letting me job shadow her and later sent her a thank you card.
I didn't call her but I did message her. I introduced myself and told her that I was a student at LHS and that part of our graduation requirements was to job shadow a career we are interested in. She said that she would be happy to let me job shadow her so we set a date.
The day I went to job shadow her I went and introduced myself again. Then we sat down because she was getting ready to do a lady's nails. As she was sculpting the customer's nails I asked questions about the career. I asked how long she went to college for, how much flexibility she had according to dresscode, hours, and things like that.
At the end of the day I learned many things. I learned that you come become a cosmetologist within a year and to go to college you just need to have your high school diploma or GED. I also learned that to be a cosmetologist you don't have to apply to work in a beauty salon. Maria rents a booth in the beauty salon and pays rent so she's practically her own boss. Her being her own boss means she has a lot of flexibility with dress code and the hours she works. She can go in whenever she wants, she can take appointments whenever she wants, and she can also wear whatever she wants.
I really enjoyed job shadowing Maria Morales. I learned a lot of informational things that helped me decide whether or not I wanted to become a cosmetologist. I don't see myself as a cosmetologist any time soon but I do see my self working in this field in the future.
